Pawleys Plantation in Myrtle Beach is a classic example of how great architects can carve great golf courses out of the lowcountry, at least the back nine, which incorporates marsh and wetlands into both hazard and aesthetic almost like art, while the front nine is a more traditional layout.

The design is smart. The par 3's may be short but with smaller landing areas over water. The par 4's that are longer have huge traps and a few narrower landing areas to keep you concentrating while the shorter par 4's have natural obstacles and doglegs that make intelligent placement a must. The course varies from narrow to wide fairways and landing areas, from water and traps to various distances and tee box spots. It's a well-balanced course that is a joy to play, with a few holes you'll be talking about for years.

This course features several challenging holes, the most difficult being #2, a 461-yard, par 4, featuring out-of-bounds stakes lining the right side of its elevated, narrow fairway. This hole is a good challenge for even a scratch player.

This par 72 championship course plays to 7,026 yards from the gold tees, 6,522 yards from the blue tees, 6,127 yards from the white tees, and 4,979 yards from the red tee boxes.

The longest hole on the course is # 11, a par-5 that plays to 563 yards. The shortest hole on the course is # 7, a par-3 that plays to 172 yards from the back tees.

Watch out for # 2, a 461-yard par-4 challenge, and the #1 handicap hole on the course. The easiest hole at Pawleys Plantation Golf & Country Club is # 12, a 382-yard par-4.
