Detailed description

Edgewood Country Club is a Private, 18 hole golf course located in Sissonville, West Virginia.

Chartered on April 4, 1898, as Glenwood Athletic Club, the present Edgewood Country Club is the oldest private country club in the state of West Virginia.

In October 1907, the name of the Glenwood Athletic Club was changed to Edgewood Country Club.

At the outset, Edgewood had tennis courts, but no golf course. Later, approximately 100 acres of additional land was purchased by the Edgewood Building Association and a golf course was constructed.

In 1969, the original 9 hole golf course property was sold to the City of Charleston for a municipal course and park. Edgewood Country Club bought approximately 600 acres of land on Derrick's Creek near Sissonville and developed a new (the present day) 18 hole championship course. The first 9 holes were opened for play in September of 1970 and the second 9 holes the following spring. The course was designed by George Cobb.

The Edgewood Country Club golf course's front and back nines are very different. The fairways on the front nine are wide open, then gradually narrow as you continue on through the back nine. Water hazards (lakes and creeks) come into play on six holes. The most difficult hole is #2, a 201-yard, par 3, requiring a tee shot over water to its multi-tiered green.

The Edgewood Country Club golf course plays to 6,923 yards for a par of 72 . The course rating is 73.2 and the slope rating is 129.
