Detailed description

Country Club of Orangeburg is a Private 18 hole golf course located in Orangeburg, South Carolina.

The Country Club of Orangeburg received its charter from the South Carolina Secretary of State in November 1922. The original course was built in the 1920s on142 acres of land known that extended from Broughton and Middleton Streets to the Edisto River.

The Club's modern period of growth began in the 1960's when members accepted an offer by Andrew Griffith to construct an 18-hole championship golf course, an Olympic-style swimming pool, two soft texture tennis courts, plus $100,000 and nearly 200 acres (their present site) in exchange for the original club site. (Griffith used the land for homes.) The Club's move to its present location took place on Labor Day 1962. The "new" course that opened in 1962 was designed by Ellis Maples.

In 2009, the course was redesigned and restored by Richard Mandell.

Enjoyable for all skill levels, the course is easily remembered by the 616 yard, par 5, eighteenth hole.

The rennovation included restoration of the original Ellis Maple design and upgrading the layout to meet modern standards, including a lengthening to 7,000 yards, a 2.3-acre short-range practice area, and 122,000 square feet of original greens complexes.

A fifth set of tees was added to course to accommodate a greater variety of golfers. The lower-handicaper can take the challenge of the orange tees at almost 7,100 yards, while the length-challenged golfer can pick any of the forward tees from which to play. The most forward tees present a 4,700-yard course, while the gold and black tees will at 5,400 and 6,100 yards will make the mid-handicap golfers happy.

In keeping with the original Ellis Maples layout, the member-friendly design philosophy the green sizes were increased and shaped with less severe contour.

Par for the course is 72. From the back tees the course plays to 6,692 yards. From the forward tees the course measures 5,127 yards. The longest hole on the course is # 18, a par-5 that plays to 616 yards. The shortest hole on the course is # 12, a par-3 that plays to 179 yards from the back tees.

Watch out for # 7, a 419 yard par-4 challenge and the #1 handicap hole on the course. The easiest hole at Country Club of Orangeburg is # 16, a 333 yard par-4.
