Detailed description

Skytop Mountain Golf Course, originally named Freestone Golf Course, is a Semi-Private 18-hole golf course located in Port Matilda, Pennsylvania. The setting is in the Bald Eagle Valley of the Appalachian Mountains in Central Pennsylvania. Skytop is located less than 10 minutes from downtown State College, PA, and the Penn State University as well as less than 30 minutes from Altoona, Pennsylvania.

Skytop Golf Course opened the front nine and driving range on July 1, 2006. The back nine opened in May 2009. The course was designed by James Polinchok.

The original course name, Freestone, got its' name from the multiple streams that cut through the property. (Streams that are created by watershed runoff are classified as freestone streams).

Skytop is a modern golf course using the natural flow and features of the land. The course is carved out of 270 acres of forest providing dramatic views and a pristine setting. The course blends with and beautifully complements the vegetation and the rolling terrain, routed over and around numerous streams and wetlands.

Par for the course is 72. From the back tees, the course plays to 7,001 yards. From the forward tees, the course measures 4,593 yards. The longest hole on the course is # 2 a par-5 that plays to 589 yards. The shortest hole on the course is # 4, a par-3 that plays to 126 yards from the back tees.

Watch out for # 2, the 589-yard par-5 challenge is the #1 handicap hole on the course. The easiest hole at Skytop Mountain Golf Course is # 13, a 181 yard par-3.

The front nine is routed along the flatter valley floor with five of the holes bordering the Bald Eagle Creek.

The Back nine is routed up the mountainside and provides dramatic views of the valley and the Allegheny Front. The first five holes of this nine switchback gently up the hillside while slowly gaining elevation. The finishing four holes sweep out and down the mountainside revealing incredible views and leading one back to the clubhouse. This nine features hole # 16, a 191 yard, a par 3 that plays directly down the mountainside with a 100' elevation drop. The view is spectacular!
