The Franklin County Board of Commissioners on August. 4, 2014 voted 6 to 1 in favor of moving forward with the purchase of property in a deal they’ve valued at $700,000.

The deal includes nearly 170 acres of land with four ponds as well as the golf club’s former 3,200 square-foot clubhouse and two other 4,000 square-foot buildings. The property is located at the intersection of Massenburg-Baker and Wheless roads, northeast of Louisburg, and about 30 miles northeast of Raleigh.

The county is using funds donated by the late Edgar H. Owens, who upon his death in 2010 willed the county 80 percent of his estate to be used for the creation of a recreational park in honor of his parents, V.E. and Lydia H. Owens.
