Detailed description

The Pit Golf Links is a Public, 18 hole golf course located in Aberdeen, North Carolina.

This Dan Maples designed golf course first opened for play in 1985.

Par for the course is 71. From the back tees the course plays to 6,600 yards. From the forward tees the course measures 4,759 yards.

This shot-maker's course was formerly a sand quarry.  It has very narrow fairways and well-manicured greens that are fast, and several of them are island greens.  Water hazards come into play on five holes, including #12, a 167-yard, par 3, featuring an island green.  Some holes were built with the classical Pinehurst style in mind, featuring rolling fairways bordered by pine trees.

The Pit had character. It has been described as a "if you dare" type of links layout. There were pinhead-sized greens including #8 with a tree guarding the front-left portion of the small green, blind shots, zigzag fairways, mounds, dunes, the aforementioned island green, forced carries, and no carries, hole #16, a 90-yard par-3.

The Pit garnered the cache of a "cult classic" until Mike Strantz created an even more dramatic version called Tobacco Road Golf Club in 1998. It out pitted The Pit  and drew away business. The Pit eventually succumbed to financial pressures and closed.

The course closed December 2010. Pinehurst Resort owner Robert Dedman Jr. purchased The Pit Golf Links and its surrounding 900 or so acres in February 2011.
