Detailed description

Swansea Country Club is a public 27 hole golf facility located in Swansea, Massachusetts. The facility has two golf courses, they are the 18-hole Championship Course and the 9-hole Par-3 course.

The Swansea Golf Course Championship Course first opened for play in 1962. The Par-72 course was designed by Geoffrey S. Cornish.

The golf course plays to 6,840 yards from the back tees. The course rating is 72.7 and the slope rating is 124.

For the most part of the 1900's this area, on which Swansea Country Club now sits, served as a private hunting and fishing preserve for Mr. Isaac Merriman of Fall River, Massachusetts. Mr. Merriman was a prominent textile merchant. He built a levy and damn along the Palmer River creating a beautiful 50-acre freshwater pond.

In the early 1960's Mr. Nelson Doyle purchased the property and by 1963, with the aid of Geoffrey Cornish, the course at Swansea Country Club was built. For 25 years the course was owned by the Doyle family and managed by Sheila and Paul Doyle. In the late 80's the property was sold to an investment group with plans to redesign the land into a residential area. But with the real estate market in a decline during the late 80's and early 90's their concept was never realized.

In 1992, another Doyle family purchased the property and set out to renovate the course and bring modern maintenances to this classic golfing gem. Much has been done to this course and with every year comes new improvements to the course including their most recent addition: a massive drainage system overhaul resulting in improved playing conditions year round.
