Detailed description

Lakewood Golf Course is a Public 18 hole golf course is located in the upper Kennebec Valley on Route 201 in Madison, just outside of Skowhegan, Maine.

Lakewood Golf Course first opened for play in 1925. The course (9-holes) was designed by Alex Chisolm. The back nine was designed by Phil Wogan and completed in 1995.

Lakewood Golf Course was built in 1920’s as part of the Lakewood Colony summer resort. The original nine has a classic links feel and a good balance between challenge and playability. The back nine is a parkland course cut out of the thick Maine woods. The course combines well-designed holes, including Maine's only Par 6, with amazing scenery to give you a great golfing experience. Nestled amongst white pines and beautiful mountain views the 6,278 yards at Lakewood is challenging and welcoming to all golfers at any skill level.

Lakewood began as a nine hole country club, part of the Lakewood Colony summer resort. From the 1920s to the 1960s The Lakewood Theatre was home to Broadway Summer Stock with casts that included some of the finest actors of the time. Lana Turner, Humphrey Bogart, Lynn Redgrave and Lloyd Bridges are just a few of the familiar names that performed at the theater.

In 1980 the golf course, theater, inn and camps were sold at auction and the Browne Brother’s purchased the course. Under the guidance of Browne Family Enterprises the course grew from 9 to 18 holes. With the completion of the Phil Wogan designed back nine in 1995 Lakewood became one of the most enjoyable golf courses in the state.

Par for the course is 72. From the back tees the course plays to 6278 yards. The course rating is 68.4 with a slope rating of 122. From the forward tees the course measures 5490 yards. The longest hole on the course is # 12, a par-6 that plays to 660 yards. The shortest hole on the course is # 10, a par-3 that plays to 130 yards from the back tees.

Watch out for # 8, a 410 yard par-4 challenge and the #1 handicap hole on the course. The easiest hole is # 17, a 394 yard par-4.
