Detailed description

Ingersoll Memorial Golf Course is a Public 18 hole golf course located in Rockford, Illinois.

Ingersoll Memorial Golf Course first opened for play in 1922. The course was designed by Tom Bendelow.

Ingersoll Memorial Golf Course is an old Rockford favorite. The course was named for Lt. Clayton Ingersoll, who lost his life in an air crash in France during World War I.

What Ingersoll lacks in length it more than makes up for in tightly tree lined fairways and postage-stamp greens. Ingersoll is a classic example of early 1900s parklands golf architecture. The lovely clubhouse features a shaded practice range out back and, in 2004, the Rockford Park District added the Ingersoll Learning Links, a four-hole, par three course with a practice range, greens and bunkers just for children.

#3 is a 209 yard par 3 and one of the toughest par-3s in town. It's all uphill, well-guarded by bunkers and overhanging tree limbs, and the green runs dramatically back down to the fairway. Avoid hitting the ball above the hole and leaving yourself a downhill putt. Jail lurks behind the green and on both sides in various forms - hardpan rough, trees, bushes, cart paths and the like. Accuracy is necessary on #3 and all but the finest golfers should be very pleased, indeed, with a score of par.

Blanket Tip for All Par 4s and 5s. With very few exceptions, there's little to be gained by hitting driver at Ingersoll. At a total length of just over 6,100 yards, you won't need the length and there's a lot more trouble than you'd think in those big, heavily leafed trees lining almost all fairways.

Par for the course is 71. From the back tees the course plays to 6,107 yards. From the forward tees the course measures 5,820 yards. The longest hole on the course is # 2, a par-5 that plays to 508 yards. The shortest hole on the course is # 15, a par-3 that plays to 118 yards from the back tees.

Watch out for # 2, a 508 yard par-5 challenge and the #1 handicap hole on the course. The easiest hole at Ingersoll Memorial Golf Course is # 15, a 118 yard par-3.
