Detailed description

Manele Golf Course, originally named The Challenge at Manele, is a Resort, 18 hole golf course located in Lanai City, Hawaii.

The course first opened for play in 1993. The course was designed by Jack Nicklaus.

This is a target-style course that is located along the rugged coast of Lanai. The design incorporates several hundred acres of natural lava outcroppings.  The was built on the side of a hill and every hole offers a fantastic view of the ocean. From all but the forward tees, virtually every tee shot requires you to cross a mini-canyon to get to the fairway. The fairways are open and the greens are small and fast.

The signature hole is #12, a beautiful par 3, you tee off from a cliff over the ocean with the green located on another cliff. The carry on this hole from the men's tee is about 185 yards. From the championship tees, it requires a 202-yard tee shot to reach the green.

#17 is another beautiful hole, with a 215-yard carry over the ocean from the back tee.  The course has several blind tees and approach shots.

#16, a 458-yard, par 4, has a sand bunker in the middle of the fairway.

Because of the hillside construction, there are numerous changes in elevation throughout the course.  There are five separate tee boxes per hole. The course has been on Golf Digests' list of "Top 100 Courses You Can Play in the U.S."
