Detailed description

Wee Burn Country Club, is a Private, 18 hole golf course located in Darien, Connecticut.

Designed by Devereaux Emmet, the Wee Burn golf course first opened for play in 1896.

Wee Burn plays to 6,809 yards from the back tees. The course rating is 73.8 and the slope rating is 139. Par for the course is 72.

Wee Burn Country Club was the first organized golf club in the state and "either the second or third in the United States." The name of the club was taken from a small stream, Stony Brook, which ran through the old grounds. Originally a small house on the Post Road in Noroton - across the street from St. Luke's Episcopal Church was rented for a clubhouse and nearby land for a seven-hole course was rented. The lease stipulated that the links couldn't prevent the landlord from continuing to use the fields as pasture for his cows. Eventually more land was bought on Hollow Tree Ridge Road and the course was enlarged to nine holes and then 18 by (at the latest) the 1930s.

Wee Burn Country Club is the largest taxpayer in Darien, with an assessed property value (equal to 70 percent of estimated value) of $29.8 million.

As recently as 1999, the club did not allow women as full members - they were subject to restricted tee times and barred from the clubhouse.

6th Hole at Wee Burn Country Club is a Par 5, 588 yards layout. It is regarded by many as one of the best holes in Connecticut. Woods, water, sand, great length, fairway mounds, small green - what more could you want from a golf hole? This long par-5 plays from an elevated tee down toward two ponds and a dogleg left with out-of-bounds to catch both slices and hooks. The second shot is supposed to clear the ponds and the earthen mounds, leaving a short third shot to the well-bunkered green.
