Detailed description

Battlement Mesa Golf Club is a Public 18 hole golf course located in Battlement Mesa, Colorado.

Battlement Mesa Golf Club opened for play in 1987. The course was designed by Joe Finger and Ken Dye.

Par for the course is 72. From the back tees the course plays to 7,309 yards. From the forward tees the course measures 5,386 yards. The longest hole on the course is # 7, a par-5 that plays to 615 yards. The shortest hole on the course is # 8, a par-3 that plays to 145 yards from the back tees.

Watch out for # 7, the monster 615 yard par-5 challenge is the #1 handicap hole on the course. The easiest hole at Battlement Mesa Golf Club is # 16, a 180 yard par-3.

The front nine is situated in a valley in the mesa and has a few more trees than the back nine. The fifth, sixth and seventh holes are known as "the gauntlet" - and for good reason. The fifth is a 554-yard par 5, the sixth is a par 4 of 476 yards and the seventh is another par 5, some 615 yards in length. On the fifth hole, you're heading right at the Battlement Mesa and enjoy majestic mountain views. The sixth hole plays back in the opposite direction, while the seventh hole is one of the prettiest on the front side, with an elevated tee offering views of the clubhouse and the mesa that sits across from Battlement Mesa.

Despite dramatic changes in elevation, the course is very fair. Most greens offer run-up opportunities, but there are exceptions. The striking first green is perched high above the fairway, so you'll need to attack from the air on. Rough is placed in front of the green, and this is one time you'll actually appreciate the taller grass as it prevents balls hit a little short from returning to the bottom of the hill. Short one-shot holes, such as the 145-yard eighth, give golfers opportunity to test their accuracy. There's water on the front and right of the green, along with bunkers on the left, making the tee shot a good test of the your iron skills.

The back nine at Battlement Mesa is nearly devoid of trees and offers a true high-desert experience on a mesa overlooking the Colorado River. While the vistas are more open, the final nine holes are just as demanding in terms of accuracy thanks to the presence of "The River." From the eleventh and twelfth holes, golfers get their first look at the Colorado River, which flows at the bottom of a steep slope. That slope and the beautiful views continue on holes thirteen and fourteen.

#18 is a dogleg-left par 4 of 445 yards, with out-of-bounds left. While you'll need to hit it long to reach this hole in two, drives that carry too far will find a watery grave in the lake the runs from the drive zone all the way up to the green.
