Detailed description of Oakmont Golf Club, West Course

Oakmont Golf Course is a 36 hole semi-private facility open to the public. The Oakmont courses are located in Santa Rosa, California. The two 18 hole courses are named the West Course and the East Course.

The West course is a par 72 course while the East course is an Executive par 63 course.

The West course at Oakmont opened in 1963. The course can be played at over 6,300 yards, if you want the full test. It is a typical Ted Robinson course, designed for enjoyment and challenge. The front nine sports small greens, the smart player will aim for the center of the green and from there have a relatively short birdie putt.

The back nine has larger greens and more yardage that will require a longer iron into the greens. Its an easy walking course and scenic vistas are part of every hole.

The West Course par is 72, the rating is 70.8 and the slope is 128.

I really like Oakmont West. It is most always in great condition, the course is challenging and the holes are unique. The greens are "slopey" and escaping with a 2-put is many times a bonus for this 20 handicapper. One (I won't call it a negative as much as a challenge) thing that Oakmont does is to keep their rough in the higher range. This makes finding a wayward ball a bit difficult at times. The houses are set far enough back to where they aren't an issue. The course is set in the Valley of the Moon and the views of the surrounding hills and mountains really enhance the ambience. I play it as much as I can.

Would travel: 30-60 Miles
Bottom line: I would play again, Better than average course for the area, Ranks with the best in this price level

Not an overly long course. Overall, the layout is fine with lots of trees. It is a nice looking course.

My main and only complaint are the greens. Virtually every green has extreme slope and is very quick. So if you think your shot onto the green is going to stay on the green, forget it, it will roll off. If you think that you will hit it short and have the ball roll up to the hole, forget it, the slope on the front will keep it there. If you try to chip it near the hole from the fringe, forget it, because it will probably roll 10-20' past. I usually only 3-putt about 1-2 times a round but I must have 3-putted 6 times that day.

One other thing to note is that there are houses on almost every hole. Most of these houses sit right next to the course so if you are someone who slices or hooks, you might be knocking a few balls off of some homes.

Would travel: 10-20 Miles, Not Vacation Worthy
Bottom line: Average course for the area

Good course, some rain during the day but not enough to hurt carry of the ball. Greens very fast and undulating, one green had the flag in an almost impossible place to make a par.

Very fast greens in great condition. Not a long course, but greens are challenging to the short game -- often uphill approaches, well trapped and undulating, and very fast.
