Detailed description

Santa Maria Country Club is a Private, 18 hole golf course located in Santa Maria, California.

Santa Maria Country Club first opened for play in 1921. The course was originally a 9-hole layout. It is not known who designed the original course. The first course was built on where holes 1-8 and 17 & 18 are currently located. The course was Scottish Links golf course. Following WW II, additional tees were constucted allowing golfers to have a different tee angle when they double looped for an 18-hole round. Additional ajacent land was aquired and in 1951 the back nine was added using design plans made by Bob Baldock. The course remained pretty much unchanged until the 1980's when modifications to a number of greens and bunkers were made under the design guidance of Robert Muir Graves.

Today, Santa Maria Country Club has changed from its Scottish links roots. The course now has many trees. Water hazards (lakes and creeks) and sand bunkers come into play on a number of holes. The semi-fast greens are large, and the fairways are narrow.

Santa Maria Country Club measures 6,502 yards from the back tees. The course rating is 71.3 and the slope rating is 129. Par for the course is 72.
