Detailed description of Morro Bay Golf Course

Morro Bay Golf Course, is a Public, 18 hole golf course located in Morro Bay, California.

Morro Bay Golf Course first opened for play in 1923. The course was designed by Russell Noyes.

Situated in Morro Bay State Park this scenic course offers views of the ocean at almost every hole. It has hilly tree-lined fairways. The course design is a mountain-style layout.

Morro Bay Golf Course is often referred to as "Poor Man's Pebble Beach" and is a "must play". The course offers panoramic ocean views from just about every hole. This "player-friendly" 18-hole public course has tree lined fairways and hilly terrain placing a premium on club selection.

The golf course is located at the base of Black Hill overlooking picturesque Morro Bay and the Pacific Ocean. It sits inside Morro Bay State Park and Estuary. Many birds and wildlife call the golf course home, which has been awarded "Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary" status.

Morro Bay Golf Course plays to a par of 71 and a maximum distance of 6,360 yards for a course rating of 70.4 and a slope rating of 118.

From the forward tees the course measures 5055 yards. The longest hole on the course is # 16, a par-5 that plays to 512 yards. The shortest hole on the course is # 4, a par-3 that plays to 130 yards from the back tees.

Watch out for # 2, a 440 yard par-4 challenge and the #1 handicap hole on the course. The easiest hole is # 10, a 192 yard par-3.

The course was bought a few years ago by a partnership (one partner is the former "Pro" at Chalk Mountain Golf Course in Atascadero, California). They have made significant improvements in the course since they bought it and they "rent" the course from either the city or the county (I have no idea which). The greens have improved significantly since I began playing there in 2002 and many dead trees have been taken out. This year, however, I have noticed that the ownership is beginning to plant many more trees and even in the middle of the fairway on the sixth hole. Thus, in a few years the new trees will, if anything, block the persistent wind on the course which is due to the proximity of the Pacific Ocean and the height of the course. The new ownership has also improved the Chipping/Iron Range which is located to the left of the 10th fairway and have purchased new golf carts which are the most-comfortable ones I have ever ridden in.

I'm a member of the MBGC so I'm probably biased. However, I play this course at least once a week and often twice. The views are stunning. I look out over the ocean and the estuary and know why I live here! The course is the fastest draining course I've ever played so even rain brings good players from the other nearby courses. Yes, it is relatively easy. The only thing that keeps us competitive in match play against other clubs are the greens. They are definitely wicked but local knowledge helps considerably. I find the quality of the course (greens, fairways, rough, etc.) amazing for a county run course. The only course I like better in the area is Cypress Ridge and it is twice as expensive.

Course is a poor mans Pebble Beach: Fairways are Kakua grass, and greens are small and all of Poa grass. Put extreemly fast downhill, very slow up, and break maddeningly from the sides. Many holes have wonderful views, with holes 4 and 9 being above average. Many trees have caused the course to be less defensive and challenging due to some type of bug killing off many of the beautiful trees lining the fairways, however, these are being replaced - but will take many years to defend the course in the historical manner. The course management or County Officials should put in some traps, pending the growth of these newly planted trees. Beyond this issue, there is really nothing negative to state about this course. Long hitters, without the trees or traps should find the course somewhat at their mercy, however, watch the greens - they can jump up and grab you. For the average driver of the ball, holes 2, 9, and 13 - you will find particularly long. It is a fun course: enjoy yourself and the price is right.

the fairways are generous but the greens are very difficult. The distance is a good challenge for the average golfer. The longer hitters 250 yds and better would not find it very hard. The difference between the white tees and blues' is almost nothing. So I guess that there could be a larger gap in yards from the blues to the whites. there could also be more bunkers and a water hazard or two added even knowing that we are water challenged in this state.

Ths is a poor mans Pebble Beach Course. Small poa greens, kakua fairways, and wonderful ocean views. Only difference is that views aren't directly on the ocean and it does not cost $500/$600 to play. The course in the past number of years has lost some of its teeth due to a disease to its trees, which are being replaced. However, the new growth will not quickly return the old challenge. Tomake the course more competitive pending development a few traps should be added around the course, and possibly left after the trees mature. It would certainly give it more teeth! As it is, it is hard to lose a ball or have a bad lie - the main advantages the course has are the greens, the fog in the A.M. and the tradewinds in the P.M. But it is a wonderful course, and well worth the play. Remember to check the view before hitting your second shot coming down the ninth hole!!!!

One of my favorite courses to play. Morro Bay is located on the coast with permanent natural air conditioning. It is significantly cooler than Fresno (central valley), where I live. I typically play Morro Bay in the summertime to get out of the heat (we're in the middle of a projected 15 day stretch over 100 degrees now) for a day.

Located at the entrance to the State Park, almost every hole has an ocean view. The greens and fairways are well kept, and if you have never played an ocean course, I would suggest getting paired up with someone with local knowledge, as there are some insanely tricky breaks on a lot of the greens. Course is fairly wide open, hilly, which will test your club selection skills.

After your round there is plenty of good food to be had along the Embarcadero, with a lot of restraunts having views of the Bay and the sea life.
