Ancil is a very challenging course that never I never get tired of playing. Hundreds of trees, by the river in a park with deer, turkeys and wildlife all around. If Ancil was private, would be the best track in NorCal.

#14 is the only true downside to this course... The built a new green and opened it to play befor they should of, therefore it isn't in the best shape/condition. The trade off is that #4 now has a much longer, now elevated tee box for the gold/blue/white tees.

I haven't played here in a few years now since moving out of Sacramento, but played here frequently for several years. The layout of the course is great with mature growth throughout and some interesting holes. It's popular, so pace can be an issue.

I've played this course many times in the last 30 years, and the condition has always been a problem. But this time it was just dredful, and they charge 32.00 for two for the cart. The layout is fun to play and a good test but probability won't come back.

Would travel: 0-10 Miles, Not Vacation Worthy
Bottom line: Worse than average course for the area

Ancil's park-like setting is just gorgeous. Usually the course is in great shape, but conditions have deteriorated lately. The fairways are pretty thin, just OK. The greens are really bad now with bare spots and lots of ball damage. The new # 14 green (horrible redesign choice) is a disaster--many large areas of bare dirt, plus lumpy surface where there is grass. It's a sad thing to see a great course in such poor condition.

Would travel: 10-20 Miles, Not Vacation Worthy
Bottom line: I would play again

Ancil Hoffman may have the best layout in the Sacramento area, including country clubs. The course condition has been fantastic the last couple years, which definitely makes it one of the best courses to play in the Sacramento area as well as a great value.

Ancil Hoffman is a fantastic, old-style track. The course was designed by William F. Bell, who also designed North Ridge Country Club in Fair Oaks (about 7 miles from Ancil). It is a wonderful walk, with the next tee quite close to all but one of its 18 greens.

Ancil is narrow and tough, with big trees, as others have noted. Its greens are slow and, unless recently mowed (as in, the morning of the day on which you are playing) bumpy and unpredictable, due to lots of poa, but you can make some putts at Ancil if you are on, because there is not much break. Ancil drains very well, so it is a great course during the rainy season.

If you tee off before 9:00 a.m. on the weekends, the pace of play is fine. If you start later than that on Saturday or Sunday, the course can resemble Bataan. It is hit and miss after 1:00 p.m. on a weekday. On weekday mornings, in many cases, you can zip around in under four hours, even if you walk, if you are lucky (call ahead to find out about high school matches, tournaments or other events).

The scenery is beautiful, with few homes in sight, and none near any of the actual fairways. Ancil is like a comfortable old shoe, but do not let its lack of pretension (t-shirts and jeans are fine and you will see lots of pickups in the parking lot) make you think it is easy. It will eat you up, and being long off the tee will do nothing for you if you are not straight. If you are a beginner, someone looking to play your "annual round," or if you want to take your young children out for their first golf experience, do NOT go to Ancil. It is way too difficult. To have fun at Ancil, you had better be focused and prepared. If not (or if you care not about score), drink heavily.

Very nice muni-course. The negative is that it can get very busy and pace of play can suffer. A 5 hour round is not uncommon. Beautiful old course with mature trees that will spank you on your scorecard if you hit into them.
