Detailed description of Penn National Golf Club, Iron Forge Golf Course

Penn National Golf Club, Iron Forge, is a Semi-Private, 18 hole golf course located in Fayetteville, Pennsylvania. Penn National has two 18-hole championship courses. They are, The Iron Forge Course and The Founders Course.

Iron Forge first opened for play in 1997. The course was designed by Bill Love.

Iron Forge opened for play almost 30 years after its sister course, The Founders Course. Love set out to fit the golf course to the land. The Iron Forge starts near the Michaux State Forest, in the foothills of South Mountain, and makes a single loop home, passing through a variety of terrain that offers exciting golf and views of the surrounding mountains and the rich, open farmland. In contrast to the Founders Course, Iron Forge is nearly treeless - a tribute to the Scottish links land courses, where the challenges of the natural environment can be havoc enough for the wayward stroke. The course is a blend of modern golf, with beautifully sculpted fairways and bent-grass greens, and the tradition of golf with its soul laid bare to the forces of nature.

Penn National Golf Club plays to 7,009 yards from the back tees. The course rating is 72.9 and the slope rating is 123. Par for the course is 72.

During the construction of the Iron Forge course, a small lime kiln was uncovered. Dating back to the early 1800's, this kiln is located behind the 9th green. It has been preserved, and guests are welcome to visit

This is an update of my 2008 ranking. Our seniors group played here 7-17-12 for $39, which is an excellent price for this quality course. Conditions were superb, with the exception of the greens, which putted a little slowly. That may have been a conscious decision by the greenskeeper, as the temperatures have been pushing 100 degrees for the last several days. Of particular note was the Ranger making frequent stops with cold water and ice, and taking a moment to chat with each player to ensure they were hydrating. Very good practice, not only for the courtesy, but also the safety considerations: one which other courses would do well to emulate. Course is located in one of the last dry townships in PA, but they are very gracious about allowing outside beverages, and even keeping them refrigerated while we were playing. Nice touch. Our group really likes Iron Forge, but it's a pretty good hike for most of us, so twice a year is about our limit. We highly recommend!

Our group of travelling seniors plays PN about twice a year, most recently 8-19-08. It is a superb golf course by any measure, and at $41, a real bargain. Unfortunately, it is a little far for us to travel or we would play it more often.

The layout is almost linksy, since there are few trees that come into play on Iron Forge, but there is a lot of elevation change, and the architect did a really great job of matching the course to the terrain. Some awesome holes, notably #15, which is one my all-time favorites, and I have played a few hundred different courses around the world. Conditions were excellent in August, and the course superintendent deserves a real Attaboy. Tee boxes are large, flat, and were in great shape. Fairways have large landing areas, and were lush. Bunkers are plentiful, and were very playable. Greens tend to be large and modestly contoured, and putt fairly quickly.

Staff is exceptional! One down note: no liquor license in a dry township, so if you want a beer, bring your own, and they are very accommodating about that.

Very highly recommend!!
