Detailed description of Cottonwood Hills Golf Course

Cottonwood Hills Golf Course is an 18 hole public golf course located in Hutchinson, Kansas.

The course first opened for play in 2006 as a 9 hole facility. With the completion of the remaining 9 holes in the Spring of 2007, The course was designed by Nick Faldo. Marriott Golf manages this facility.

Cottonwood Hills' gracefully rolling native sand dunes are reminiscent of the great Scottish courses. Indigenous plants frame each hole, including, while cedar, willow and cottonwood trees provide shade for the blue stem, yucca and plum thickets.

The course, has over 70 fairway and greenside bunkers. Cottonwood Hills plays to a par 72 and offers five sets of tee boxes, one to suit any skill level. The course measures 7,213 yards from the Tournament Tees, 6,778 yards from the Championship Tees, 6,386 yards from the Middle Tees, 5,858 yards from the Forward Tees and 5,372 yards from the Front Tees.

Played this course in the off-season over Veteran's Day, very fair price as I got off-season and senior rate. There are no boring holes. The par 5's are exceptional, and all different. You will find more trees on the front, more open feel on the back, hardly any houses at this point although the course is set up for development. Get out and play it before there's too much construction! I don't know what else Faldo has designed, but this is an exceptional job. It has many holes with a links feel, starting with the short par 4 second where Faldo set a big waste area between the end of the landing area and the green. I liked the back 9 better only because it wanders through areas without any visible signs of anything but golf course. The course has strategic water, and a lot of elevation change. I think the 8th and 15th, both par 5s, are as good as any 5s you will ever play. This course was under Marriott management when I played it, but that has changed for 2008, and apparently the housing development portion is on hold, so I'd recommend you get to it and play it this season while it is still largely undeveloped and slightly raw.

Would travel: 0-10 Miles, Vacation Worthy
Bottom line: I would play again, Better than average course for the area, Ranks with the best in this price level, Fair priced based on quality and competitive area pricing
