Detailed description of Stoneridge Country Club, CLOSED 2017

StoneRidge Country Club is a Semi-Private 18 hole golf course located in Poway, California.

The course first opened in 1962. The course was designed by Ted Robinson.

Par for the course is 72. From the back tees, the course plays to 6,500 yards. From the forward tees, the course measures 5,005 yards and plays to a par-73. The longest hole on the course is # 5, a par-5 that plays to 546 yards. The shortest hole on the course is # 16, a par-3 that plays to 165 yards from the back tees.

Watch out for # 8, a 430 yard par-4 challenge and the #1 handicap hole on the course. The easiest hole at StoneRidge Country Club is # 10, a 293 yard par-4.

Blue tees: par-72, 6,500 yards, 71.9 / 133
White tees: par-72,  6,065 yards, 69.9 / 128
Red tees: par-73, 5,625 yards, 74.9 / 136
Gold tees: par-73, 5,005 yards, 71.2 / 129

The course closed November 2017.

The owner of the course applied to have 25 acres rezoned for condominiums. He stated the profits from the condominiums were needed to subsidize the negative cash flow from the course operations. When a vote was held that defeated the rezoning, the course was immediately closed.

In 2013, No Stone Left Unturned, LLC (NSLU), purchased the property out of bankruptcy.  In June 2015, owner Michael Schlesinger, listed the property for sale. There were reportedly several offers made, but none accepted. Since the spring of 2016, the owner began exploring ways to redevelop the property, including having the City operate it as a municipal course.

Poway Open Space, Inc. (POS), a group comprised mainly of StoneRidge men’s golf members, formed in 2016 and began discussions with Michael Schlesinger’s PR firm, Roni Hicks, to maintain a pro course by allowing some housing development. POS led the initiative effort and filed the documents to be placed on a special ballot which has been paid for by NSLU.

Measure A asked voters to for approval to change the land use zoning of 77 acres of the StoneRidge property to allow for no more than 180 residential condominium units for residents over the age of 55 to be built on no more than 25 acres.  On November 7, 2017, in a citywide vote, Measure A did not pass by a wide margin and StoneRidge closed the next day.

See the course video for a detailed explanation as well as some good views of the course.

Special rate programs poorly managed. Bar prices high."Happy hour" does not begin until late afternoon when players are home for afternoon naps. Good staff and general management. Men's club tournaments outdated, after 30 years, still requires men (regardless of age or handicap) must play from Blue tees, no incentive for players to play with other members except their sames decades old cliques.

Would travel: 0-10 Miles, Vacation Worthy
Bottom line: I would play again, Better than average course for the area, Ranks with the best in this price level
