How long can you wait on a ball overhanging the hole?
Q. During the second round of the 2007 U.S. Open at Oakmont Country Club, K.J. Choi's approach landed on the green and hung on the lip of the hole. Upon reaching the hole, K.J. had how many seconds to determine if the ball was at rest.
What is the correct answer?
A. 5 seconds
B. 10 seconds
C. 20 seconds
D. 30 seconds
And the answer is....
The answer is B, you are allowed 10 seconds. A player is allowed time to reach the hole without unreasonable delay to check the location and status of his ball. He is then allowed an additional ten seconds to determine whether the ball is at rest. If by then the ball has not fallen into the hole, it is deemed to be at rest. Rule 16-2, ball Overhanging Hole is the applicable rule.
